Thanks for the post but that's not accurate. A homeowner has no sovereignty over the airspace above their home and a drone can fly in this airspace anytime the pilot needs to cross the property. They cannot fly directly over people but flying over the property is totally permissible. Where it gets tricky is hovering. Normally you shouldn't hover over property unless you are working commercially to photograph a home for real estate purposes. Other than that, it's not considered trespassing since anything from the ground to the heavens is under the control of the FAA.

@@Dronevalley like you said “you are not a lawyer”. Trespassing laws vary from state to state. I live in a state where land owners can and do have people arrested for trespassing. If you are flying 50 feet above the ground flying past houses, you are trespassing, and could be violating state privacy laws as well. You would be better off getting permission before buzzing around houses. Thomas Gemmell, who owns a drone company admits it is a grey area. You cannot state for certain where property owners rights end and yours begin, in a short video.

@@Sides1160 Thanks for the reply but it's pretty simple and lawyers have nothing to do with it. The FAA has jurisdiction over the skies and if you're flying anything, those are the only laws that matter. Several states have tried passing "aerial trespassing" laws over the years and they have all been slapped down by the FAA. Hovering is a different matter and I call that out in the video. That was actually the entire point of the video to be fair. There is no confusion on this issue, if you're flying (and moving), you can cross anyone's property without permission as long as you follow the simple rules the FAA has established. Towns can pass any of the laws they want for protecting your privacy if you're flying low or hovering but flying is different.

@@Dronevalley I did not say lawyers had anything to do with it. I said that you are not a lawyer. You have disregarded my original post. There is a 2013 case in Kansas where a National Geographic photographer was arrested for criminal trespassing for flying over posted property to take photos for a story. There are limits on what you can do. You are speaking in very general terms. I admit that the case is not exactly the same, but it is close enough for my point.

@@Sides1160 Thanks again for the reply and I didn't disregard your original post but you don't need to be a trained lawyer to understand the law. The reason I'm responding so quickly to your posts is that it's important to get the facts straight for other drone pilots. When opinions start to count as much as the facts, everything gets a little fuzzy. For example, that event you referenced there had nothing to do with him flying over the property and everything to do with him taking pictures. If he was simply flying the para-glider, it would have been no big deal. The offense that got him into hot water was the fact that he was photographing a feed lot where there were accusations of the mistreatment of animals, and he was documenting that. In many states this is considered an invasion of privacy and I agree that it is. Just like someone flying over your property and taking pictures. The flying isn't prohibited, but snapping pictures of your family would be an issue. No different than if your neighbor got on a ladder or the roof of his house to take pics over a fence. Both are creepy and in most states also illegal. It's really important to understand the difference because drones can absolutely fly over a property but hovering starts to create the issue. I hope that helps explain it.

We sold them and with the newer batteries and higher capacities the chargers got too expensive. We shifted to making our own products like these that you can use with your drone batteries and other gear like phones, tablets and cameras.

@@Dronevalley Doing the kind of flying that I do the simultaneous charging of the batteries is unbelievably useful but oh well I guess if you can't do it you can't do it.

@@SgtJamesRay You might want to look into the new DJI power 500 and Power 1000 units from DJI. They have an SDC port that can charge the Mavic 3 and Air 3 batteries fully in about 25 minutes. I use these power stations when flying and they can keep the drone aloft all day by charging one battery while I'm flying with another.

I was referring to a typical DC to DC converter that has a fixed input and output voltage that is more of a "brute force" conversion. This SDC port on the DJI Power 500 and Power 1000 is more nuanced and can adjust the output voltage through software and interacts with the various external connections to provide just the right amount of DC at a much higher current. Unlike a traditional Dc to DC converter that is fixed, this SDC port is adjustable.

Actually, that's exactly what it means. Engineers have an insatiable curiosity about all types of tech and are actually schooled on RF theory during their education. So any Electrical Engineer you talk to would have had classes on RF and Microwave topics. Both of these antenna are based on long-standing physical principles that are used in tech today all over the world. In addition to that, I've been flying RC planes for decades, and UAV products since the early days of the hobby and have a ton of real-world experience as well. So you can trust me when I post a clip like this.

A drone can fly over your property but shouldn't hover. That's the exact point of the video. Hovering over a backyard is just plain creepy. The only exception to this is if someone is filming some real estate near your home and they may need to hover over your yard to get a picture of one of your neighbors yards.

That may seem like a good idea until you realize that its a federal offense to shoot at any aircraft. A man in Texas is being sentenced this week for that exact situation.

Thanks for the reply but I guess that you're smarter than both Archimedes and the team of Yagi and Uda because they would disagree with you. Both of these range extenders are based on sound scientific principles that have been proven to work for hundreds of years and used in countless products. The parabolic reflector is from ancient times and flashlights, dish antenna and a host of other items would be rendered useless if it didn't focus a signal. The Yagi-Uda range extender is in wide use as well in all types of radio gear and can greatly increase signal strength. You might want to do a little research before posting. There's an old saying that applies here - it's better to be thought of as a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt.

I'm terrified that this legislation will have a huge impact on our hobby. The thing I keep coming back to is that MOST drones flying today are made in China so why is the government singling out DJI? Besides all of the technical limits to anyone using a drone to "spy", DJI is the only company building safeguards (NFZ restrictions, data encryption) into their products, which makes them some of the safest aircraft flying today. It's clearly a case of the lobbyists sponsoring Senators to prevent DJI from competing for contracts in the U.S. against homegrown gear that has less features and costs 8X more on average. And this is happening right before our eyes. Shameful

@@Dronevalley Yeah the bill creator has ties to that expensive American brand. Clearly special interest stuff. But, with your knowledge of how drones work, do you think dji drones might literally be bricked somehow? Or they will still be operational, albeit illegal?

All I've seen around this tech is early, large and very expensive. It's nowhere near ready for consumer/commercial drones like these DJI models. I'm sure it will get smaller and cheaper but that's years away from now. It would need to incorporate ADS-B, Lidar and some visual sensors to ensure it didn't miss anything.
